There are six types crossbows in Runescape: the normal crossbow, the phoenix crossbow, the metal crossbows, the Dorgeshuun Crossbow, the Hunters' Crossbow and Kharil's Crossbow. The phoenix crossbow has slightly better stats than the normal crossbow, but cannot be bought in shops. It can only be obtained from the Phoenix Gang weapons storage or from other players.

Metal crossbows are used to fire metal bolts. For more information on how to make the crossbows and bolts, please see the [link ur=http://www.runeweb.net/index.php?page=rs2-fletching#mcrossbows]Fletching Guide[/link].

The Dorgeshuun Crossbow is a stronger Crossbow that can be purchased in the shop in the Cavegoblin Caves, after completing the Death To The Dorgeshuun Quest. The bone bolts for the crossbow can be bought in the same store as the crossbow.

The Hunters' Crossbow can be purchased from Leon in Yanille Hunter Store. It can only fire kebbit bolts, obtained from certain kebbits. See the Hunter Guide for more information.

Bolts are shot from crossbows and are an alternative to the bow and arrow combination. The crossbow and bolt combination is slower than the bow and arrow, but is one handed - thus allowing the free hand to equip a shield, prayer book, or anything else. Bolts are smithed, fletched, and in the case of the silver bolt, crafted. All bolts but the bronze bolt are members only; members may also add gem tips to their bolts, and also enchant the tipped bolts.
(see Fletching Guide and Smithing Guide for making bolts.)

Metal/tipped bolts requires a crossbow that corresponds to, at least, the metal it is made out of, to fire. (e.g. A bolt made out of bronze can be fired by any crossbow. A sapphire bolt is made out of a mithril bolt, which can only be fired by a Mithril Crossbow or above.) What bolt can be used with what crossbow is covered below.

* - The Dorgeshuun Crossbow can use bone bolts, purchased from Dorgeshuun Goblins, which no other Crossbow can use.

* - The Hunters' Crossbow can only fire Kebbit Bolts. For more information, see the Hunter Guide.

Grapples

Grapples are designed to help you scale high obstacles in which Agility alone cannot help you. Mithril grapples can be attached to an appropriate bolt, and then used with an appropriate crossbow. To use a grapple, you must use the grapple with a rope, then use it on an appropriate shortcut. There is a chance that the rope can break.

A list of Grapple short-cuts can be found in the Agility Guide.

Enchanted Bolts

Gem tipped bolts can also be enchanted with regular magic to give them special effects and powers. Information on Bolt Enchantment can be found here.

Bolt Pouches

While some Crossbow users like to use a single type of bolt, others may want to keep a variety with them. The Crossbow Bolt Pouch is very useful in this case. Each pouch has four slots for storing different bolts (each one able to hold up to 225 bolts), and one to access the currently equipped bolts. To store bolts in the pouch, simply use the bolts with the pouch. Left-clicking on the pouch will open a menu showing you what you have stored inside.

Bolts can be removed from the pouch or equipped by right-clicking on them. Please note that grapples cannot be stored in the pouch. The pouches are untradeable, and if they are dropped, the pouch is destroyed and any bolts inside appear on the ground. Pouches can be purchased from the crossbow sales dwarf in Keldagrim.
