Rewards
The Pest Control Mini-Game, located on the Void Knight's Outpost island, is a fun way to gain experience, and other rewards. In this mini-game, you will have to fight off various monsters and protect a Void Knight, and the area. Read on to learn more. You will need at least 40 Combat to participate.
Getting Started
To get to the Void Knight's Outpost, a small island in Runescape, you will have to head to Port Sarim and talk to the Squire, located south of the boat that sails to Karamja.
You will soon arrive at the Void Knights Outpost, which contains a couple of buildings, namely a bank, Magic Store, a Ranged Store, and an armour repairman.
The Magic Store sells runes for various combat spells, for not too much.
The Ranged store only sells javelins and arrowheads.
The repairman will repair any of your broken axes or Barrows Armour, for a price. There is also a General Store.
Playing Pest Control
To begin playing this fun little mini-game, make sure you have the right equipment. You'll want the best armour you have, and you may prefer to bring equipment with prayer bonuses, like initiate armour. Wear things like Glory and Strength Amulets, and bring high level weapons. If you're ranging, wear the best dragonhide you can, and bring the best arrows and bows you have (Crystal Bow can be a great a help here). Of course, wear high level mage armour if you're maging. Wear things like ranger or wizard boots, depending on how you're fighting. Prayer potion s are a big help.
Once you're all geared up, head to the southern part of the island, where there are three landers (boats) - the Novice, Intermediate, and Veteran Landers. The Novice lander requires at least 40 combat to board; the Intermediate requires at least 70 combat; and the Veteran requires at least 100 combat to board. The lander will leave after 5 minutes if 5 or more people are in the lander, or automatically when the lander is full (25 people). The amount of monsters on the island you go to depends on which lander you took (Novice of course has less monsters, with Veteran having the most) and the amount of people that boarded the lander.
When the ship reaches its destination and lands, the game begins! The main goal of Pest Control is to prevent the Void Knight from dying. If he dies, you lose. The Knight is located somewhat in the center of the island, on a pedestal, usually dancing about. Fortress walls and barricades surround him, and the four portals lie the farthest out. You can win in Pest Control by two ways - either by destroying all four portals, which is the usual way; or by defending the Void Knight for 20 minutes. Various monsters - pests - will run about, either defending the portals or attacking the Void Knight.
If you wish to play defence, you can either stand by the Void Knight and fight the attacking monsters, or you can go into the watchtower and use ranged/mage attacks on them. There are various walls and barricades in and around the fortress; these can be destroyed by some pests, and repaired, if you wish with logs and a hammer. Repairing anything gives 5 extra damage points.
You can also attack one of the four portals through which the various monsters are attacking from. The Void Knight is also healed 60 points for each portal destroyed.
When you are in the Pest Control area, you will notice four circles in the top right hand corner of the screen, circled in red in the above picture. These respresent the in game status of the four portals - they start at 250 and end at 0.
You can also see in the top left hand corner two images and a number after them. The top one indicates the health of the Void Knight - when it reaches 0, he dies, and the game is over. Below that, a little sword indicates the amount of damage that you've dealt so far, and this is the basis of your reward.
The Monsters
Since you'll be dealing with them, you may want to learn about the various monsters you'll be facing. There are seven different monsters, and each one offers its own bit of malice and skills to prevent you from winning.
Brawlers
Levels: 50, 75, 100, 128, 157
Brawlers are big, monstrous melee creatures that block your path and smack you around a bit. The higher ones can be tough to beat, but they mostly hang around portals, and usually don't reach the Void Knight.
Defilers
Levels: 33, 50, 67, 84, 101
Defilers are annoying little ranged monsters that stray near the fences. They shoot rapidly at the Void Knight from afar. You'll want to try and take them out if you're defending the Knight, for they deal far more damage when left alone then the melee monsters who never get too close to the Knight.
Ravagers
Levels: 35, 52, 70, 88, 105
Ravagers are pesky little devils that run around and tear things up with their sharp claws. If you want to make use of the structures in the area, don't let the Ravagers near them - they'll 'ravage' them apart.
Shifters
Levels: 37, 56, 75, 94, 113
Shifters wouldn't be all that trouble if they didn't have the ability to teleport short distances away. They can teleport pasts walls as well. One second you could be safe behind a barricade, ranging it; the next, it could pop up behind you. Watch out!
Spinners
Levels: 37, 55, 74, 87, 92
Spinners aren't a danger to you, but they can repair the portals, and rather quickly. Since the only way to win is through repairing the portals, you'll need to kill the Spinners before you can try to take down any portal.
Splatters
Levels: 21, 32, 43, 54, 64
Splatters may seem harmless as they bounce around, however, do not let them fool you. They can explode at will, and destroy your fort and barricades, as well as deal damage to surrounding players, including you.
Torchers
Levels: 33, 50, 67, 83, 100
Torchers are much like Defilers - they hover nearby the Defilers, and share the same goal of dealing damage to the Void Knight from afar. However, while Defilers use a ranged missile, Torchers use a magical ball of fire as an attack.
Rewards
If you and everyone else manage to destroy all four portals and win, or if you manage to defend the Void Knight for 20 minutes, you will receive some gold pieces based on your combat level, along with some Void Knight Points based on how much damage you dealt (you must have dealt at least 50 damage to get a reward), which can then be exchanged for various things at the Point Exchange shop. If the Void Knight dies, you lose and get no points. Winning a Novice lander game yields 2 points; Intermediate yields 3 points; and the Veteran lander yields 4 points.
You can buy EXP in the Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, or Prayer skills; for more, you can buy it by 100 points, or for less, buy it by 10 points or 1. You get an extra 10% experience if you spend 100 points, and an extra 1% if you spend 10. The amount of experience you get is your level in that skill squared and then divided by 6. If you chose Prayer, it is divided by 12.
You can also buy Void Knight equipment. To purchase any Void Equipment, you will need at least level 42 Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged and Magic, as well as level 22 Prayer.
Note: Black = Neutral Stat, Purple = Attack Stats, Blue = Defense Stats.

If you wear a full set of Void Knight Equipment (that is, all of the equipment shown above), there is a special set effect. With a Void Melee Helm on plus the rest of the set, there is a +10% bonus to Attack and damage; with a Void Ranger Helm on plus the rest of the set, there is a +10% bonus to Range Attack; and with a Void Mage Helm on plus the rest of the set, there is a +30% bonus to Magic attack.
You can also buy a seed pack, which offers random seeds, a mineral pack, which offers random ores from tin to adamantite, or an herb pack, which offers random herbs ranging from Guam to Irit Leaf.
Good luck at Pest Control!
