Soloing The Blast Furnace

Note: This is a 'dangerous' Mini-Game. If you somehow die, you will lose your items.

Location: Eastern Keldagrim, next to the tavern

Overall Requirements: 30 Firemaking, 30 Strength, 30 Crafting, 30 Agility; must have started the Giant Dwarf Quest to enter Keldagrim

The Blast Furnace is the most efficient smelting device in all of Runescape. It has a 100% success rate for smelting iron and only requires half the amount of coal to smelt bars compared to a normal furnace. For example: Adam would take three coal instead of six and Rune would require just four coal. Since the Blast Furnace requires a lot of attention and work, it’s easier to operate with a group of friends, but it is possible to do it solo.

Overview

Anyone can use the Blast Furnace. You simply put your ores onto the conveyor belt and collect from the other end. For anyone under level 60 Smithing, you will have to pay 2500 gold pieces to take your bars, or 1,250 gp with a Ring of Charos. You will not lose your ore if you log out - no one else can take your bars. If the bar mould on the bar dispenser fills up and glows orange, you must pour a bucket of water on your bars to cool them. However, to be able to use the furnace, the Blast Furnace must be running.

There are five primary parts to the Blast Furnace, each using a different skill to run. It’s recommended to switch stations with your friends to share the different variations of experience. You may also talk to the Dwarf Foreman to get a brief runthrough on how each station works.

Pedals

Operating the pedals turns the conveyor belt which drops ore into the melting pot. It requires 30 Agility and also drains your run energy. Energy Potions are recommended. Once you are out of energy, you will automatically hop off the bike. You receive roughly one Agility experience per second of pedaling.

Stove

You will need a spade (one spawns in the furnace room) to keep the stove lit as well as 30 Firemaking. Simply click on the coke holder to get a load of coke, and then click on the stove to refuel it. When the top grate in the stove turns orange, it is hot enough. Using six scoops of coke after the stove has turned orange will keep it running for maximum length and productivity. You receive five Firemaking experience per scoop.

Air Pump

The air pump requires 30 Strength to operate. Its purpose is to pump the heat from the stove to the furnace. You must watch the heat gauge (see below) to assure it does not overheat or you WILL take damage. You receive two strength experience per pump.

Temperature Gauge

The temperature gauge shows how hot the Blast Furnace currently is. You must constantly check the gauge while pumping in order to keep it from overheating and taking damage. The white part of the gauge means that the furnace is too cold and needs more pumping/fuelling. The green part of the gauge is the right temperature; where you want the needle to stay. The red means it’s too hot and you must stop pumping. The Temperature Gauge will also alert the reader if the stove is low on fuel or if there is a broken part.

Broken Parts

With most machinery, parts occasionally break/leak and there is no exception for the Blast Furnace. You need 30 Crafting and a hammer (spawns in the furnace room) in order to repair parts. There are two pipes that break near the Gauge and two cogs that stop working next to the bicycle. You receive 50 experience for each repair.

Smithing

If you want to smith your bars into something, there are anvils awaiting you in the fenced off area north west of the furnace. However, you must have level 60 Smithing or higher to access them.

Shops

There are two shops near the Blast Furnace which can be a good help.

Ore Shop

Ordan the ore salesman sells every ore up to Mith. This store offers a faster way to smelt by selling your noted ores to Ordan and buying them back. Ordans shop is also restocked by a NPC who, quite frequently, drops off random ores.

Armour Shop

Jorzik runs his own armour shop near Ordan. He sells all types of armour ranging from Mith to Rune, but unfortunately he does not stock his own shop. All items in the shop are made by players.

Soloing The Blast Furnace

While often done with a team, you can operate the furnace by yourself. To do so, make sure you have a hammer, bucket, and a spade - then follow these steps:

- Place your ores on the Conveyor Belt
- Operate the pedals to drop your ores into the melting pot (May also need to fix the conveyor belt during this time if it breaks)
- Shovel coke into the furnace until it is glowing orange
- Operate the pump; watch for when your bars are completed by moving the camera into position; also watch for broken pipes that may need repairing
- Fill your bucket with water and then use it with the bar dispenser to quickly cool your bars

That's about it. Good luck!
