Note: This is a 'dangerous' Mini-Game. If you die, you will lose your items.
Location: Southeast corner of the volcano in the center of the Wilderness
Requirements: None
The Bounty Hunter is basically what was once 'PKing' (player-killing) encased in a mini-game. In this game, you will hunt down other players and defend yourselves from others in a volcanic arena of death.
At the southeast corner of the volcano in the center of the Wilderness, you can find the entrance to the Bounty Hunter Mini-Game. There, along with a bank, is a guy by the name of Mandrith, who will explain the game to you if asked. Basically, you go in one of his crater arenas with a bunch of other people and you kill each other. However, there are item requirements & restrictions you have to follow if you want to play the game:
You cannot bring any non-combat items into the arena (eg. coins, herbs, fishing rods, etc.)
You cannot bring any Summoning Scrolls, Pouches, or Familiars into the arena
You can only bring three pieces of armour for each inventory slot, and each piece must represent a different type of combat; eg. as far as helmets go, you could only bring in (for example) a Dragon Medium Helm (melee), a Robin Hood Hat (ranging), and a Mystic Hat (magic)
You can only bring in a maximum of four wieldable weapons, as well as up to 1,000 of any stackable ammunition (runes, arrows, etc.)
You must be able to equip, wield or wear any item in your inventory
You can bring items like food or potions into the craters (in case you didn't realise that)
When you are promptly geared up (make use of the bank outside the volcano), you must choose one of the caves that lead into the crater arenas where the fighting takes place. There are three caves, but each one has a combat requirement, as shown in the table below.
Cave/Arena
Combat Level Required To Enter
Western Cave
Levels 3 through 55
Central Cave
Levels 50 through 100
Eastern Cave
Levels 95 +
Unless there aren't enough players playing, you will be teleported directly to the crater arena populated with other players within the specifications. If there aren't enough, you will be brought to a waiting room until there are enough, in which case you will be informed how much time is left until everyone is teleported into the crater.
When you are in the crater, you will be instantly skulled, and a pile of coins will accompany your skull. These coins indicate the total market value of the items in your inventory, so this way you can see which players have more expensive items. When you are first teleported into the crater (you will be placed at random near one of the exits) you have six seconds to prepare yourself, during which you cannot be attacked. There will be an indicator on the screen which says what player you have been assigned to kill (and there will be an arrow above this player should you find him), but you don't have to kill that person - you can kill anyone you want! Please note:
You can attack someone who is already in combat only if they are your Bounty Hunter target
You can be attacked when in combat if you are the Bounty Hunter target of your opponent
Note: At level 32 Magic, you can cast the Bounty Locate spell to teleport directly to your assigned target! (One Law, Fire, and Air Rune required)
If you kill who you are assigned, you and only you will be able to see what they drop (they'll have to drop everything except for one item in the case that they have the Protect Item Prayer activated), and then you will be assigned another player to kill. However, if you choose to be a rogue and kill someone else, a countdown will begin. If you do not pick up the items of the non-assigned person you killed, then nothing happens and the countdown will go away when it is done counting. If you do pick up the items, another countdown starts. When this countdown is active, you cannot leave the crater, log out, or even activate the Protect Items Prayer. The only way to end it is to kill the person you are assigned.
You can improve a sort of reputation by hunting and killing your chosen targets, or even by killing everyone else. There are two massive stone scoreboards near Mandrith that list the Hunter (those that kill who they are told) and Rogue (those that kill anyone) highscores.
The points you receive for killing other players is based on their past performances in the Bounty Hunter mini-game. These scoreboards record each player's scores until they are no longer in the top 10 or there is a game update, at which time they are cleared temporarily. Your performance and ratings are remembered, and will be put back on the scoreboard the next time you leave the crater. Hunter and Rogue scores can also be checked on the highscores list, though you must have a score of at least 250 to be on it.
You can also receive a cash reward for killing your assigned targets. Players who kill 10 or more of their assigned targets will earn cash rewards based on the market value of their combat equipment. This cash amount is worked out by taking the second, third, fourth and fifth most expensive combat items you are carrying and giving you access to an amount of coins based on their value. There is a limit to the cash reward you can earn per 10 kills, according to the crater you entered.
Low-Level Crater: Cash reward of up to 40,000 gp
Mid-Level Crater: Cash reward of up to 80,000 gp
High-Level Crater: Cash reward of up to 120,000 gp
Please note that you don't have to kill 10 assigned targets in one go. You can take as many breaks as you want, and how many more you need for a cash reward will be saved and recorded. Furthermore, per each 10 bounty-target kills, you will receive 15 Law, Fire, & Air runes - the runes needed for 15 Bounty Locate Spells.
