Smithing EXP Quest Rewards

Smithing is a skill that allows you to create your own weaponry and armor for use (mainly) in melee combat. This skill is one of the oldest in RuneScape and one of the most traditional for new players to begin raising, though it remains a continuous challenge to players with more experience. Be prepared to spend a lot of money on this skill if you wish to get it to a respectable level.

Getting Started

Smithing is composed of two separate stages, Smelting and actual Smithing. Smelting is the process of turning ore(s) (obtained using the Mining skill) into bars of metal using a furnace. The actual Smithing portion involves turning the bars of metal into various weaponry and armour using a hammer on an anvil.

Smelting

Smelting is performed by taking ores to a furnace, right clicking the furnace, and selecting type and quantity of metal bars to forge in the furnace. The best place to smelt is the furnace in Port Phantasmys, the ghost town.

The best place for freeplayers and the second best place for members-only would be the furnace in Al Kharid. The table below shows the number of each type of ore needed to create one bar of metal, the level required to smelt ores into certain metals, the experience received (per bar created) for smelting ores into metal, along with the experience for smithing those metals.

* - Iron ore Smelting has a 50% chance of succeeding. If you fail to create the bar, the ore is lost and nothing is produced. The Ring of Forging (see below) can boost the success rate to 100% when worn.
** - These items are not smithed after smelting, but used in the Crafting Skill (with the exception of two items that can be smithed from Gold bars. For more information, see the Special Items section later in this guide.). See the section on the Goldsmithing Gauntlets (see below) regarding gold.
*** - This item can only be smelted after completing the Knight's Sword Quest.

There are certain items and spells in RuneScape that can assist players with Smelting, these are detailed below.

Tool
Info
Superheat Item
The Modern Magic spell Superheat Item requires level 43 Magic, 1 Nature Rune, and 4 Fire Runes to cast. The spell will smelt one bar of metal of your choice, and is guranteed to smelt Iron Ore into bars.
Ring of Forging
Rings of Forging are created by casting level-3 Enchant Jewelry on a Ruby Ring. When equipped, the ring allows the wearer to successfully smelt Iron Ore every time. After 140 Iron Ores, the ring is destroyed.
Goldsmith Gauntlets
Upon completing the Family Crest Quest, you can opt to enchant your Steel Gauntlets into Goldsmith Gauntlets. Wearing Goldsmith Gauntlets while smelting Gold Ore increases the experience received from 22.5 to 56.25.

Popular Furnace Locations

There are many furnaces across RuneScape, and these are among the more often used ones.
  • Lumbridge: North of the Castle

  • Al Kharid: North of the Bank

  • Falador: Town Center

  • Port Phantasmys (Amulet of Ghostspeak required if you haven't done Ghosts Ahoy Quest)

  • Zanaris

  • Shilo Village: Requires 20 gold to use

  • East Ardougne: Near the bridge

Please note that this list only includes popular Furnace Locations; there are many more throughout Runescape, and can be found on the Runescape World Map.

Smithing

Smithing is accomplished by using metal bars on an anvil. A hammer is required to smith anything on an anvil. When you use a bar of metal on an anvil, you will see the dialog shown below. Simply right click on the appropriate item, and select a quantity of item to manufacture.

You get experience per bar smithed into a product, no matter how many bars are required to make that product. For example, making three Axes (which require 1 bar of metal) gives the same experience as making one Chainbody (which requires 3 bars of metal). The best place to smith bars would be the West Varrock anvils. The anvils at Yanille are almost as close.

Most smithable items can be smithed in all metals. The higher level the metal, the stronger the item and higher level it takes to make it. Some items can only be made from certain metals, and these are detailed in a section later in this guide. The table below shows the experience gained from smithing that many bars (That is, Iron under 5x is the value for smithing 5 Iron Bars). The last column is the combined experience value from smelting and smithing one bar.

Barbarian Smithing

While little known to the major population, most spears are smithed by barbarians. They can also smith a handy one handed spear called a 'hasta'. Barbarian Smithing is different from regular smithing, though. For more information, see the Barbarian Training page.

List of Popular Anvil Locations

There are many anvils across RuneScape, and these are among the more often used ones.
  • Varrock: Near the East Bank

  • Varrock: Near the West Bank

  • Dwarven Mines

  • Seer's Village: West of the Bank

  • West Ardougne

  • Port Khazard

  • Yanille: South of the Bank

Please note that this list only includes popular Anvil Locations; there are many more throughout Runescape, and can be found on the Runescape World Map.[

Dragonfire Shield

Take the items to an anvil, and use the Draconic Visage on the anvil. As long as you have level 90 Smithing, you will successfully create a powerful Dragonfire Shield, as well as be awarded with 2000 Smithing experience.

Tips and Tricks

Typically, the only items that sell for enough money to cover the costs of purchasing the ore are the ranged or fletching items, such as throwing knives, arrowheads, or dart tips. These also take an inordinate time to smith, accordingly. (It takes the same time to smith one set of arrowheads with one bar, as one plate mail body with 5 bars.)

If you wish to use coal, Steel bars give the highest exp/coal ratio. Smithing them into cannonballs also nets a good profit. If you wish to raise smithing exp as cheaply as possible, smith iron arrowheads, as you will break even and iron is the cheapest metal to smith quickly.

If you wish to sell your items to shops, the items that give the most cash for your bars are Short Swords, Square Shields, Plate Legs, and Plate bodies. If you're selling to other players, throwing knives, dart tips, and arrowheads go for the most cash. Scimitars and Kite shields also go for relatively higher prices.

Some enchanted jewelry, such as the Ring of Forging (which gives you a 100% chance of success while smelting iron ores), can help greatly with your smithing. See the Enchanted Jewelry section of the Crafting Guide for more info.

Extra Smithing Info

There are some other, extra things that you should know about while raising smithing:

The Blast Furnace

In the dwarf city of Keldagrim, you can participate in the Blast Furance Mini-Game. In here, you and a team of people can smith ores into bars, but with half the coal regulary needed. It can be useful and fun. See the guide for more info.

Cape of Accomplishment

The ultimate reward for getting level 99 Smithing is not only the great ability you will have in the skill, but the Cape of Accomplishment that you will have the oppurtunity to purchase. For more information on Capes of Accomplishment, see the Skill Capes page.
