Runecrafting EXP Quest Rewards

Runecrafting is a very interesting skill. Of all the skills, it has a rather detailed explanation. The skill consists of creating runes. In order to perform the skill, you first need to complete the Rune Mysteries quest.

How to start Runecrafting

First, you need to get some rune essence. Runecrafting is centered around Rune Essence. However, there are two kinds of Rune Essence: Rune and Pure Essence. Rune essence can only be used to make Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Mind and Body runes. In addition, Rune Essence cannot be placed in pouches. This is the only type of essence that may be mined in free-player worlds.

Pure Essence can be used to make any Rune. Any monsters which drops essence will drop the pure essence. This essence may only be mined if on a member's world and if the miner has level 30 or above mining. Any quests or situations where rune essence may be used, either Pure Essence or Rune Essence may be used. To acquire either essence, you must mine it in an essence mine. Rune essence is located in a special mine that can only be accessed by a teleport.

To exit the rune essence mine, go through one of the portals. Below is shown who can teleport you to the rune essence and their locations.

The Wizards Guild is located in the eastern part of Yanille and requires 66 Magic to enter. The Wizard Distentor is located on the first floor.

Talismen

After you have some essence, to make runes you'll need to travel to the correct altar for the rune you wish to make. The altars are found and accessed with talismans. There is a talisman for each altar (and therefore each kind of rune). The table below lists the NPCs that most commonly drop the pertaining talisman.

* - The Elemental Talisman can be used on all four of the Elemental Altars.

In addition to the NPC's listed above, all Abyssal Creatures (see the The Abyss section) may drop any type of talisman, with the exception of the Death, Law, Blood & Soul Talismans.

Each rune has its own altar. After you have found the proper talisman for the rune you want to make (see table above), right-click it, and choose the 'Locate' option. It will tell you in which direction the altar is located. The locations of the altars are listed later within this guide. Once you find the correct altar (looks like stonehenge ruins), use the corresponding talisman with the ruins. You will be teleported to the altar. Simply click on the altar to create your runes. To return, click on the portal.

An alternate to using the talismans is to use an enchanted Tiara. First, craft a Tiara using the crafting skill, then take a blank Tiara, along with the right talisman, to the corresponding altar. Use the talisman on the altar, and the talisman will be consumed to infuse the Tiara with that rune. You can now wear the tiara and be able to enter that particular altar without a talisman.

Infusing a tiara with the rune gives 5x the experience of creating one rune of that type. There is no minimum level requirement.

Below are details concerning the locations of the altars. The altar locations are circled in blue on the map pictures.

The Ourania/ZMI Altar

The Ourania Altar is a mysterious and powerful altar that was unfortunately discovered by the Zamorakian Magical Institute, or ZMI. This altar, known mostly as the ZMI Altar, has extremely powerful magical properties. The entrance to the dungeon containing the altar is located west of the Khazard Battlefield. You can also cast a teleport to the altar with Lunar Magic at level 71 Magic. The quickest way to use this altar would be to use the teleport there and then use a Ring of Dueling to teleport to Castle Wars.

Content Image

You will not need a talisman or tiara to get to the altar. The entrance to the altar cave is guarded by Eniola, a representative of the Bank of Runescape hired by the ZMI. He will grant you access as long as you pay him 20 of any kind of rune. Once inside, you will see their are two paths. The southeast path is quite long, but completely safe to walk through. The other path is one fourth the length of the longer path, but it is guarded by Zamorak Mages, Rangers, and Warriors, all of whom are happy to kill you. Wear armour good enough to protect you, and use protective prayers to keep you safe.

Things don't get really spectacular until you reach the altar. You can only use pure essence on this altar, but it has an effect worth it. When you use your essence with the altar, your essence will be converted randomly into any kind of rune (except combination runes), regardless of your Runecrafting Level (though players with higher Runecrafting Levels will craft higher level runes more often). For example, a player with level 20 Runecrafting Level could use essence on the altar and receive Soul Runes! You will only receive one rune per essence no matter what, but you will gain double the experience that you would normally have. The altar is definitely worth it.

Table of Runes

Below is given a table of the runes you can make with the Runecrafting skill. Note: Runes referred to as Members items in this table are Members items in a Runecrafting context, not a Magic one.

Combined Runes

Many runes can be created from melding together two different elemental runes. The runes act as either or - for example, a lava rune can act as either a fire rune, OR, an earth rune - not both.

For example, lets take an imaginary magic spell that takes 4 earth, 3 air, and 1 mind. You can perform the skill with 4 dust rune and 3 air runes, and the mind rune. You can perform the skill with 3 dust runes and 4 earth runes, and the mind rune. Or, you can use 7 dust runes and 1 mind rune.

Combined runes don't modify the number of runes required for a spell, but improve the versatility of spells you can cast with one stock of runes.

As for runecrafting them, you must bring a number of runes of the first elemental type, and an equal number of essence, to the altar of the second elemental type, with that appropriate talisman (does not matter which is which). Also, to guarantee complete crafting of the desired rune, you MUST wear an enchanted emerald necklace of binding.

To highlight an example, I could either take 20 earth runes, 20 essence, and a fire talisman, to the fire altar, to create 20 lava runes. Or, I could take 20 fire runes, 20 essence, and an earth talisman, to the earth altar, to create 20 lava runes. Note that you must *use* the talisman on the altar, not just click on the altar, to create combination runes. Talismans are consumed in the process of creating these combination runes.

Magic Imbue

If you can use Lunar Magic and have level 82 magic, you can cast the useful Magic Imbue spell to help combine your runes. This spell allows the spellcaster to combine runes without an altar for a short period of time. For more information, see the Lunar Magic Page.

Multiple Runes from one Essence

After you reach a certain level, you will be able to make multiple runes from one rune essence. Runecrafting experience is by essence, not by rune,so the experience you gain will remain the same. Below is a table showing the levels you need to make multiple runes per essence:

The Abyss

The Abyss is a recent update to the Runecrafting skill, that allows a 'shortcut' to each and every altar. To begin using the Abyss, you must carry out a mini-quest. Speak with the Zamorak Mage in level 5 wilderness, just north of Edgeville.

He'll tell you to speak with him in the Shrine to Zamorak, in the southeast of Varrock.

Once there, go through the conversation and he will give you a Scrying Orb, with the instructions to teleport to the rune essence, with it in your inventory, from 3 different locations. Once you do so, return to him and go through every conversation line. He'll give you an Abyssal Book and a Small pouch (see section on pouches below), and the Abyss will now be open to you.

What you can do now is enter the Abyss from the Zamorak Mage's wilderness location. Upon using his teleport, your prayer will be drained immediately and you will be skulled.

Directly after the teleport, you'll be at the outer ring of the Abyss, surrounded by Abyssal Walkers, Guardians, and Leeches. You must enter one of the various blocks placed at the middle walls to enter through into the inner ring. These blocks include:

Boils - Burn them using a tinderbox.
Tendrils - Cut them using a hatchet axe.
Rocks - Mine through them using a pickaxe.
Eyes - Distract them with your thieving skill.
Gap - Wedge through it with your agility skill.

Once you bypass one of the blocks, you'll be in the inner ring.

The inner ring contains teleportation portals to the altars of every rune type (the unreleased rune portals will not work), and a Dark Mage in the center. You can enter through one of the portals to arrive directly at the altar of the respective rune, to runecraft your essence.

(NOTE: The Law portal requires that you have no armor or weaponry, so you can't sneak into Entrana with armor through it.) Taking the dragon amulet with you and runecrafting in this method is the *fastest* method of solo runecrafting of the harder runes. It is *very* highly recommended for crafting Cosmic, Chaos, and Nature runes.

Pouches

With the Abyss update comes 4 very useful items - Essence pouches. Essentially, they are simply bags that you can fill with Pure Essence, and remove. They serve as inventory expansions and will allow you to craft more of a rune in one trip, though you may only have one of each pouch at a time. Please note that you cannot place Rune Essence in pouches.

These pouches can be received only from killing Abyssal creatures, and require a certain runecrafting level to use. They also wear down over time as you remove essence from them.

If their capacity begins to decline, speak with the Dark Mage in the center of the abyss to repair them to full capacity.

Runecrafting Tips

While most altars have more or less easy routes and strategies, the Nature Altar can be complicated. The fastest way to runecraft natures may sound complicated but it's really easy. There are 2 options you may take, requirements for both will be stated:

  • Take as many essence in notes as you can, one nature tiara, a bit of gp (at least 5 gp per essence you have), and stuff the rest of your inventory with essence. Craft them into natures, and then run to the General store north of Tai Bwo Wannai. Sell notes and rebuy as essence, and then run back to runecraft. Wash, rinse, repeat. Works well with runners assisting you.

  • If you have dragon amulets, take the nature tiara, essence, and wear the dragon amulet. Craft the runes, teleport to Al Kharid, bank your natures/extract more essence, and use the nearby Gnome Glider to fly to a region east of Shilo. Run north, cross the log, and head west to the nature altar. Repeat. Requires access to the Shilo Glider, aka finished the Grand Tree Quest. Less of a hassle since you don't have to deal with the general store.

Some enchanted jewelry, such as the Binding Necklace (which gives you a 100% chance of success while combining runes), can help you greatly with your Runecrafting. See the Enchanted Jewelry section of the Crafting Guide for more info.

Extra Runecrafting Info

There are some other, extra things that you should know about while raising runecrafting:

Cape of Accomplishment

The ultimate reward for getting level 99 Runecrafting is not only the great ability you will have in the skill, but the Cape of Accomplishment that you will have the oppurtunity to purchase. For more information on Capes of Accomplishment, see the Skill Capes page.
