The Tower of Life

By: Makoto

Start Point: Speak to Effigy at the tower south of Ardougne, next to the Necromancer's Tower
Items Needed: A beer (from any pub), hammer, saw
Skills Needed: Level 10 Construction

Head over to Effigy, and strike up a conversation with him. He'll tell you about the Alchemists' tower, and that the builders are going on strike because the building is too weird. He'll then ask you to finish the work. Have a chat with Bonafido, the head builder.

Bonafido thinks that the whole situation is wierd, the machinery and what-not doesn't make sense to him, and he doesn't want to lift a finger until he gets an answer. Since you're the type of adventurer that must poke their nose into certain places, you ask to take a look around. But, he won't let you in without the proper gear.
You must be wearing a hard hat, boots, scruffy trousers and a shirt before Bonafido will let you in.

Start by chatting it up with Gummy and Black-Eye. Black-Eye will ask you questions about Construction.

How many nails does it take to build a rocking chair? Answer: Three
What takes 3 planks, 3 cloth and 3 nails to make, and helps remove light from a room? Answer: Torn Curtains
I like fish and I want to put some in my garden, but I need a special water feature. What materials would I require? Answer: 10 clay pieces

He'll hand over his spare hard-hat.

Gummy will tell you his clothes were lost in a storm. Search the bushes around the tower and you'll find some trousers.

Talk to 'The Guns'. He'll practically give you his shirt...in exchange for a beer. If you don't have one, walk to up the Flying Horse in Ardougne and buy one.

Now for the boots. Talk to No-Fingers.

He'll be greedy and he won't want to share his many boots. So, take matters into your own hand(s) and steal them from him.

When you have your complete outfit, talk to Bonafido. He'll ask you some questions:

You've plenty of work to do but you need a drink fast - What do you go for? Answer: Tea
How would you normally whistle? Answer: Whistle for attention
What's a good sign that you need to replace your trousers? Answer: Your legs are getting a bit cold
What do you do if you cut your finger? Answer: Carry on, it'll fix itself

After another round of questions is complete, you'll have to complete the pipe system, a pressure machine and a strange cage at the top.

Note: Everything you'll need is in the crates at the base floor. Refer to the map below for locations of certain things:

Starting from the first crate on the right (if you are facing the door from the inside), each crate yeilds these items going clockwise:

Pipe Rings
Rivets
Valve Wheels
Triangle Sandwiches
Binding Fluid
Metal Bars
Coloured Balls
Metal Sheets
Metal Bars
Pipes

The Pressure Machine

Head up to the first floor. The pressure machine needs fixing, and it requires the following:

4 Coloured Balls
3 Pieces of Metal Sheeting
4 Valve Wheels

Once you've located them, head back up to the pressure machine and fix it. Now, the poor thing needs to be properly calibrated.

Note that the wheels can only be turned if their corresponding lever is in the correct position. Pipe 1 will turn with levers 1 & 2 up; Pipes 2 & 3 will turn with lever 1 down and lever 2 up; and Pipe 4 will turn with both levers down. Plug the holes up and turn pipes to full blast.

The Pipe Machine

The pipe machine is on the second floor. It requires the following:

6 Rivets
4 Metal Pipes
5 Metal Rings

Like before, after you build this, it will need to be calibrated.

Using the directional buttons, move the pipes into place:

The f-shaped pipe goes on the far left.
The Small-Bend Pipe takes the second left slot and connects with the T-Pipe.
The Branching Pipe takes the third slot from the left and connects with the T-Pipe. You must rotate it twice.
The T-Pipe takes up the far right slot and connects with the Branching Pipe.
The Large Bend Pipe connects the Junction Pipe to the Branching Pipe in the last available slot.

The Cage

There is a cage on the third floor. It requires the following:

5 Metal bars
4 bottles of Binding Fluid

Once you've constructed this, you'll need to cut some of the metal down to size.

Use the horizontal button to place a bar across the circumference of the cage. Use the vertical button to place a bar across the height of the cage. Use the plus or minus buttons to increase the number of bars. Use the arrow buttons to rotate the cage around.

After the cage is complete, run outside and tell Effigy. He'll jump for joy and then run upstairs to the top of the tower, where you'll see the cutscene of a Homunculus being summoned. During this cutscene the tower will begin to collapse, and they will all run away downstairs. Follow them outside.

Somehow, Effigy will convince you to talk with the Homunculus. Head upstairs and proceed to engage it in conversation. You'll learn that it's a creature of logic and magic.

Talk with him and ask him questions, depending on which side you want him to go to -- the World of Magic or the World of Logic. After that's done, run outside and confront Effigy.

You'll see a funny cutscene of the Homunculus confronting Effigy, and telling him to never return. Head to the dungeon after this is done.

(The alchemists are long gone.)

Head north and have a chat with the Homunculus. He'll tell you he was made with dangerous Godly power. He rewards you with the power to make monsters.
