He explains two things, that troll raiders attacking Burthorpe need to be stopped by a counterattack, and that you need to figure out the combination to the puzzle lock in the castle.

Lets do the puzzle first. Denulth said that there was a guard who dropped a piece of paper with the combination written on it. Question the servant inside, who will direct you to Eohric upstairs. Question him about the guard, and he'll tell you to search the Toad and Chicken, the local inn. Harold, the guard, is upstairs.

He'll get mad at you if you question him, so leave. Eohric will tell you to loosen his tongue with a few drinks, so hand him a few Asgarnian Ales that you can buy downstairs. He says he really doesn't know what he did with the combination, and he may want a Blurberry Special. If he does, head to Gnome Stronghold if you dont already have one, and then give it to Harold.

Now that he's good and drunk, start gambling with him. Sooner or later he'll run out of cash, and give you an IOU. Examine the IOU to find out its the piece of paper with the combination.

Now that you have the combination, reading it reveals its riddle:

Since purple is north, south, and east of something, you can conclude its the middle east part. From there, the rest is easy. You've completed one half of the quest.

Head up the path to the Death Plateau. You'll find a wounded soldier, who'll inform you that trolls bombard anyone who goes past the large danger sign. Which they do. It's painful.

Talk to the hermit in the small cave you should have seen on the way up. If you question him, he reveals the existance of a Sherpa.

Take the side route on the path (visible on the World Map) to come to the Sherpas. Note that the guy's name (Tenzing) is the name of the Sherpa who led the first successful expedition up Everest. He agrees to help, but he wants 10 loaves of bread and 10 cooked trout, along with some new spikes on his climbing boots from Dunstan.

Talking to Dunstan (The local Smith) reveals that he'll only spike the shoes if you get his son into the Imperial Guard, and an Iron Bar. Talk to Denulth, get the certificate, and take it and the iron bar to Dunstan.

After getting the shoes spiked, head back to Tenzing. You'll give him the stuff, and he'll give you a map of the secret passage. Now, go check the path behind the guy's house. It's clear all the way, and keep going until you get a message telling you that you've gone far enough. Return and talk to Denulth to complete the quest.
