The God Spells

Compared to the powerful spells of Ancient Magic, Modern Magic may seem a bit weak. Well, thats sort of true; the basic combat spells aren't better than any Ancient Magic Combat spell, except for perhaps the wave spells. However, Modern Magic offers a few extremely powerful spells - to name three, the God Spells: Claws of Guthix, Flames of Zamorak, and Saradomin Strike.

God Mages

You may be asking yourself, how can I obtain these powerful spells? Well, you'll have to participate in the Mage Arena Mini-Game. Read on for more information.

Game Overview

The Mage Arena Mini-Game is more of a Mini-Quest really. Located in levels 54 through 55 Wilderness, the Mage Arena is made up of two parts - the actual arena, and the space below it. It is located a tiny bit west of the 'lever house' that teleports you to Ardougne and back. The quickest way to get there, would be, of course, to use this lever; however, you must becareful; that area, and the area around the Mage Arena is a popular PKing spot. Since you'll be in levels 50+ Wilderness, there are a large range of people that can attack you. You could teleport somewhere else in the Wilderness using Ancient Magic, or you could walk the whole way; if you do either of these last two options, make your way first towards the Ice Plateau, then approach the arena from the west, where PKers aren't roaming as much.

You won't want to go straight into the arena; no, enter the basement of the arena first. There are two webs blocking your way here, so you'll need some kind of a slash weapon. This is one of the biggest PKing spots. If you see many people, try logging out and trying another world. Otherwise, quickly slash the two webs if they are up, then run over and teleport out. If someone is waiting, they most likely won't be able to kill you fast enough - however, bring some food just in case.

The basement of the Mage Arena is non-wilderness. There is a bank, as well as a small rune store available to you. However, the main thing here, if you're doing the Mage Arena Mini-Quest/Game, is Kolodian, a master of battle magic. When you're ready, you'll end up fighting him in various forms for the right to use God spells. However, before we do that, let's go over your gear.

Recommended Equipment

When you fight Kolodian, you won't be able to use any kind of melee or ranged weapon - magic spells all the way. Any Wave Spell or Fire Blast will work. If you're Fire Blasting, have enough runes for 200 or so. If you're using a wave spell, bring a little less; about 150 or so will do, though you might only need 100 if you're using Fire Wave. You could use Ancient Magic, but it's expensive, and somewhat of an overkill on Kolodian - he isn't that difficult.

You probably won't need the best mage armour or robes you have, especially Ahrim's - no need to get it damaged when Mystic, Enchanted, or Infinity Robes will work. You could do it with Splitbark Armour too; higher levels with good food and prayer potions could easily do it with Monk's Robes or Wizards Robes. Bring an elemental battlestaff that will help you with your spell, and preferably an enchanted one - a Mystic Air Battlestaff is a good choice.

Wear at least a Glory Amulet, and bring decent food - at the very least, tuna. Level 37 Prayer for Protect From Magic is highly recommended. Kolodian is a master of combat spells after all, and he isn't going to go easy on you. A prayer potion or two is also a good idea here.

Gameplay

Once you are ready, gather up your equipment and speak to Kolodion, and challenge him to a fight. Once you do this you will be teleported to the center of the Arena - be prepared for a long fight. The battle will begin quickly, so set your auto-casts on your staff if you can quickly, turn on your Protect from Magic prayer, and go for Kolodian. He isn't too difficult - but when you've defeated him, the fight isn't over.

Said master of combat spells will shapeshift into a bit of an Ogre-Giant hybrid, though it isn't that much harder. Stay focused and eat when you need to, and watch your prayer. Next up, Kolodian will transform into a massive, scary looking spider. This one isn't too hard either - pay attention and you'll be fine.

When the spider is defeated, it morphs next into a sort of Wraith-Man hybrid. Things may get a little heated here, so keep your health and prayer in check, and keep unleashing your spells at Kolodian.

Kolodian's last battle form is a huge demon, level 112 combat. He may seem big and tough, and while he's the toughest - and last foe - If you got past the last couple guys, you can easily defeat him, if you keep your prayer and food up, as well as your magic.

If you die or run at any point in the Mage Arena when fighting Kolodian, when you return, the battle will continue with the last form that you left Kolodian in.

When you're finished fighting him, you will be teleported back to the mage bank, where Kolodion will congratulate you on a good fight. He goes on to explain the god spells to you, then instructs you to enter the pool of sparkling water, and you will come out near a staff merchant. Ignore that chap for now, and head into the next room, where you will see three statues of the three main RuneScape Gods - Guthix, Zamorak and Saradomin. Choose which God you wish to worship, and then pray to him - you will receive a god cape of the god you prayed to.

Head back to the staff merchant wearing your cape, and he will provide you with a staff of the god you have chosen. You can then leave with your cape and god staff, and now, with the correct runes, you can begin work on the spell of the god you chose.

The God Spells

For now, you can only cast what god spell is available to you back inside the mage arena. To get back into the arena, exit the Mage Arena basement (remember the danger of the possible PKers outside), get past the webs, and walk forward a bit till you come to two more webs. Slash 'em, pull the lever, and afterwards, run southwest to the Mage Arena ramp entrance. Again, there is no using of melee or ranged weapons in the arena.

You will have to cast what God Spell you received first 100 times inside the Mage Arena to gain the ability to use it in the outside world. You will receive a message telling you this. When you have gained the right to use it outside the arena, you can go back to the staff merchant and purchase a new staff for 80,000 coins. You will then have to practice the spell of that staff 100 times to use it outside the arena, and the same process follows for the last spell.

Inside the arena you will notice the level 54 battle mages. If they relate to your god (ie, you are wearing the same cape), they will not attack you; whereas the other battle mages will. Be careful - the battle mages will be attacking you with the god spells of the gods they follow, and these are powerful spells. Protect from magic, as well as food is a good idea when training your latest god spell.

Only one god cape is allowed at one time. You must drop your current one and pray at a different statue to obtain a different cape. God spells are extremely powerful, and having them all at your disposal is a great advantage. In addition, at level 80 magic, you can cast the Charge spell, which temporarily increases the power of god spells - they've been know to hit around 30 with Charge.

Good luck in the Mage Arena!
