Hunter EXP Quest Rewards

The skill Hunter is a tedious, yet rewarding skill. In this skill, you will have to utilize various techniques in order to capture various creatures not only for experience, but some more useful items from them as well. Read on to learn more about this challenging skill.

Hunter: The Basics

As you may or may not already know, the Hunter skill consists of you hunting & trapping various creatures. There are nine different ways to catch various hunter creatures, all of which require various equipment which are listed in detail within the Hunter Techniques section. There are various creatures that are available for you to hunt in Runescape, all of which require a certain way for you to either catch or kill them.

This guide will first go through the equipment you will need for hunting, then each hunting technique, and, finally, the rewards you gain from hunting.

Hunter Equipment

There is a wide variety of Hunter equipment that you need to obtain before you begin hunting. You can obtain these from either the two Hunter Stores, or from trading with another player. The two stores are located in the cities of Nardah (just northeast of the bank) and Yanille (directly south of the Food Shop). The equipment is fairly cheap, so expect to spend 1K or less on the equipment.

Hunter Locations

The various hunter creatures, ready to be caught by the various hunter techniques listed below, are scattered about RuneScape in a variety of different areas. The following sections contain maps of all the locations of said hunter beasties.

Piscatoris Hunting Grounds
Type: Woodland

Just south of the Piscatoris Fishing Colony is home to many different Hunter Creatures; however, this area is ideal for normal chinchompas and kebbits. Also, this area is home to the only Falconry area, which is great for certain mid-level hunters.

Piscatoris Hunting Grounds

Polar (Trollweiss & Relleka) Hunting Grounds
Type: Polar

The snowy area between Relleka and Trollweiss Mountain, countains several creatures, but is mostly ideal for the Sabretooth Kebbits in the northern section of the area for low level hunters.

Polar Hunting Grounds

Feldip Hills Hunting Grounds
Type: Jungle

The area south of Gu'Tanoth, in the Feldip Hills, is ideal for Crimson Swifts and Feldip Weasels. It is a great starting area for many low-level hunters, but is also home to Red Chinchompas which are great experience for high-level hunters.

Feldip Hunting Grounds

Desert (Uzer and Nardah) Hunting Grounds
Type: Desert

This area, although requiring Waterskins to maintain hydration, is great for mid to low-level hunters as it contains Orange Salamanders and Desert Devils. Although this area is potentially dangerous, it is a good way to gain rather quick experience compared to the other areas for mid to low-level hunters.

Desert Hunting Grounds

Lizard and Salamander Hunting Grounds

There are three areas in which to hunt the four lizards/salamanders, with the exclusion of Orange Salamanders, which can be found in the Desert Hunting Grounds as listed above.

Canifis Swamp Lizard Area

This area, located in the swamps of Canifis (you need to have completed the Priest in Peril Quest in order to access this area) is not very ideal for experience, but contains Green Lizards which can be used as a weapon.

Canifis Swamp Lizard Hunting Grounds

Chaos Temple Red Salamander Area

This area is very ideal for high to mid-level hunters. Although these traps can only be used by one player at a time, if you manage to have access to all of the Red Salamander traps, you will be able to gain great amounts of experience.

Chaos Temple Hunting Grounds

Wilderness Black Salamander Area

In level 20 Wilderness, north of the hill giants in the eastern side of the wilderness, you will be able to capture Black Salamanders, which is a source of poor experience despite the experience that is given for capturing them. Black Salamanders are useful as weapons against other players.

Black Salamander Hunting Grounds

Horned Graahk

The Horned Graahk can be located just nort of Carin Isle, which is on the west coast of Karamja. These creatures are not great for experience, but are vital for requiring the Graahk clothing.

Horned Graahk Hunting Grounds

Lleyta Hunting Area

The Lleyta Hunting Grounds are home to Pawyas and Grenwalls. You must have started the Regicide Quest to access this area.

Lleyta Hunting Grounds

Hunting Techniques

There are many creatures in Runescape available to be hunted by you, scattered throughout, and yielding various rewards. There are a large variety of them though, so several different techniques have been developed for catching them. Read on to read about each technique, as well as the numbers you'll need to know, the items you'll have to get, and the rewards you will obtain (though, for a more in-depth look at the rewards of Hunting, see the Hunter Rewards section).

Bird Snaring
Required Level: 1+

This trap can be smoked with a lit torch at level 39 Hunter, which allows for greater success when hunting.

Bird Snaring obviously requires a Bird Snare in order to capture the birds. Training with birds is best for low-level hunters rather than high or mid-level hunters. The bird snare kills the bird at it perches upon the "T" shaped part of the trap. Be warned however, if you stand too close to a trap, the bird will land, then fly off the trap before it has a chance to kill the bird.

Tracking
Required Level: 1+

Tracking is also a great technique for low-level hunters. While attempting to capture these elusive creatures, you will need to follow sets of footprints from bushes, grass, cacti, disturbed sand and logs, amongst others which you search around the area, until you finally capture the creature.

When you eventually come to the spot where the creature is hiding, search it to get a message about something possibly hiding under the object. When you reach this point, you must use a Noosing Wand on the hiding spot. With luck, you will catch the creature. Logging out while tracking will cause you to lose the tracks, and you'll have to start over. The fur the creature drops may be used to create creature clothing which will increase your chances of capturing the creature.

Butterfly Netting

Capturing butterflies is yet another low-level hunter skill. You will need several butterfly jars, and a few energy potions to continue running around capturing these insects. You may either use the butterflies to aid you with other temporary stat boosts, or release them to continue hunting.

Deadfall
Required Level: 23+

This trap can be smoked with a lit torch at level 39 Hunter, which allows for greater success when hunting.

This technique simply consists of propping up a hefty rock by selecting the 'Set-Trap Boulder' option on a boulder while holding any kind of log in your inventory. However, you may only use a limited amount of traps at a time. Also, to ensure greater success you will need to bait the trap with the certain type of food it enjoys.

Box Trapping
Level Required: 27+

This trap can be smoked with a lit torch at level 39 Hunter, which allows for greater success when hunting.

Box Trapping is one of the best ways to gain experience in the game, but also one of the most tedious. In order to be a successful trapper, it is crucial that you wear the clothing which corresponds to your hunting area, and also by not standing on your own traps. You may also bait these traps in order to lure the creatures inside, but it is not recommended.

Rabbit Snaring
Required Level: 27+

This trap can be smoked with a lit torch at level 39 Hunter, which allows for greater success when hunting.

To snare a rabbit, you will first have to have completed the
Eagle's Peak Quest, in which Nickolaus will show you how to snare a rabbit. You will then need to Box Trap a ferret, as well as purchase a rabbit snare from a Hunter Store.

Once you have met these requirements, head out to the Piscatoris Hunting Area, and find one of the six rabbit burrows, all facing each other. Choose one (or more, depending on your capability in your hunter level), and lay a rabbit snare in the area that the burrow(s) are facing. Whence you have set up said snare, select the 'flush' option on the burrow to flush the rabbit out of the burrow, using your ferret. With some luck, the rabbit will run into your snare. You will be able to use the ferret again, unless it escapes.

Net Trapping
Required Level: 29+

This trap can be smoked with a lit torch at level 39 Hunter, which allows for greater success when hunting.

A net trap is made by having a net and rope in your inventory and using them on young trees in the area of the lizard or salamander you are trying to catch. When the trap is set, you should leave the area so as to not repel the creatures. You can also offer the right type of bait for the right type of creature; take 15 swamp tar, use it with the correct herb and a pestle and mortar, and you will have the desired tar.

Pitfall Traps
Required Level: 31+

Pitfall traps use the pits in the ground that dot the landscape around pitfall targets. You can turn these harmless holes into spiked pits with a simple knife and logs from a tree. Once your trap is set, you'll need a teasing stick. You'll need to use your stick on the pitfall creatures, causing it to run after you. Once you find yourself being chased, you'll need to lead the creature toward your pit, but remember to jump over it! With any luck, the creature will fall into your trap, and you can claim your reward - its hide can be a good hide, useable for clothing; or it may turn out ratty and bad.

The most skilled hunters can catch imps with a magical imp box. When the magic box is set, imps cannot help but be drawn to it. Having some magic beads - the ones that imps drop - as bait to help draw the imps to your box. The unlucky imps that are caught can be of much use to the lucky hunter that managed to catch it.

Imps are located in various spots across RuneScape; some popular locations include Falador, Varrock, and the farms leading from Lumbridge to Varrock.

As you hunt, you can gain various rewards from what you hunt.

Tracking Rewards: Camoflauge Clothes

This clothing can be made from furs obtained from Tracking. The fancy-dress shop owner in the East of Varrock will turn your furs into clothing for a price. Talk to her about it. This clothing will increase your chances of catching creatures in certain areas.

For example, the Wood[land] clothes will aid your Hunting in Woodland areas; the Polar clothes will aid your Hunting in Polar hunting areas; the Jungle clothes will help you in Jungle Hunting Grounds; and lastly, the Desert clothes will help you hunt in Desert Hunting areas. Hunter Tips & Extra Info

There are some extra and info and tips that you should know as you hunt in RuneScape.

Impetuous Imps

Have no fear - there is indeed a Hunter Mini-Game! Ever been pushed around just a little bit too much by an imp? Chasing one trying to get all those dumb little beads only to have the thing teleport right before you can land the finishing blow! Well, now's your chance to get back on those little implings. See the Impetuous Imps guide for more info.

Smoking Traps

At level 39 Hunting, you can use a torch to smoke your traps, to remove your scent from it. This will cause your prey to be more attracted the trap, and, hopefully, be caught. You can buy a torch at a Hunter Store. Light the torch with a tinderbox and use it on your trap. The traps that can be smoked are bird snares, deadfalls, box traps and net traps.

The Hunter Crossbow

You can purchase a Hunter Crossbow from Leon at the Hunter Store in Yanille. This bow is powerful, and can only fire kebbit bolts, which are made from the spikes of prickly and razorbacked kebbits. See the Ranging Guide for more info.

Cape of Accomplishment

The ultimate reward for getting level 99 Slayer is not only the great ability you will have in the skill, but the Cape of Accomplishment that you will have the oppurtunity to purchase. For more information on Capes of Accomplishment, see the Skill Capes page.
