Crafting EXP Quest Rewards

Crafting can be considered one of the catch-all skills of RuneScape, allowing you to manufacture items ranging from leather/hide armor to gemstone jewelry. The method of manufacture, and purpose, of the items that are craftable are almost wholly disparate, and therefore this guide is split up accordingly.

Armor

As the Smithing skill makes mainly melee armor, the Crafting skill focuses on a ranger's armor. To begin Crafting armor, you need armor material, a Needle, and some Thread, the latter two of which are buyable at a Crafting store. The armor material can either be cow hide or Dragonhide, attained from killing Cows or Dragons respectively.

Content Image

Take your cowhide or Dragonhide to a tanner (there's one in Al Kharid, and also one in Canifis), and have him tan the hides for a fee. Use your needle and thread on the tanned hides to manufacture armor. Nothing to it, just note that one piece of thread takes 5 uses before it is consumed.

As for snakeskin armor, it serves mainly as decorative armor, as Dragonhide is superior. Snakeskins may be caught in Tae Bwo Wannai village, and can be tanned for 20gp each. As a final note, only members can craft Dragonhide armors.

Spinning

Spinning fibers is a small part of Crafting, but the products are key to stringing bows or jewelry. There are only three things you can spin: Wool, Flax, Sinew, and Tree Roots. To gather wool, use shears (bought at a general store) on a sheep with lots of wool on it. You'll harvest patches of wool. Use them at a spinning wheel to generate balls of wool, which can string amulets. The following table has information on the more common spinning wheel locations.

To gather flax, pick flax at the flax fields just south of Seer's Village. Use them on a spinning wheel to generate bowstrings. Crossbow Strings can be spun from either tree roots (which are obtained when you dig up your tree in your farming patch after cutting it down), or sinew, which is obtained from killing a Cow or a Bear and cooking the meat. Upon cooking, choose the option "Dry the meat into sinew" to produce the sinew. Magic String can be created from spinning Magic Tree Roots from Farming, and are used to string Nature Amulets.

Pottery

Pottery is one of the basic parts of Crafting, and a good way to raise your Crafting level from 1, though the items you manufacture can easily be bought. To make pottery, mine Clay from various mines, and use them with water (Bowl of Water, Bucket of Water, etc.) to make Soft Clay. Use this Soft Clay at a Pottery Wheel to mold a piece of pottery and then use it at the nearby Kiln to finish the pottery piece.

A potter's wheel and kiln can be found in the Barbarian Village, Sophanem, and the Crafting Guild. XP gain is split evenly on clay working and finishing.

Dyes

Dyes can be a fun part of crafting. It allows you to change a normal capes color, and to do some quests as well. To make dyes, you can get some from spawns, or you can get them by talking to a witch in Draynor named Aggie, and bringing the materials to her.

To get a Red Dye, bring 3 Redberries and 5 Coins. Redberries can be acquired by using the Farming Skill to grow a bush and there is a spawn of Redberries south of Varrock, just east of the South Gate. To get a Yellow Dye, bring 2 Onions and 5 Coins. Onions can be grown using the Farming Skill, and they can also be found in farms around Lumbridge or Rimmington. To get a Blue Dye, bring two Woad Leaves and 5 Coins. Woad Leaves can be bought from Wyson the Gardener in Falador Park. Bring 20 coins and offer the most you can offer for his leaves, and he'll give you two.

Glass

Like Pottery, the products of glassblowing aren't useful at the start, but have highly specific uses that can benefit at higher levels. To begin glassblowing, locate a Glassblowing Pipe (you can get one on Entrana Island), and two reagents (a Bucket of Sand and Soda Ash, obtained from 'using' Seaweed on a Range). Use the Sand + Soda Ash on a Furnace to obtain Molten Glass. You can blow the Molten Glass into whatever you want. You can also use Lunar Magic to make glass if you do want to waste time running to the furnace and back. The glassblowing pipe spawns on Entrana Island, and that's the main place to blow glass quickly, excluding Shilo Village. Seaweed spawns on the northwest beach, and a Range and Furnace are on the island. The Sand Pit is near the Herblore Shop. You can find seaweed in a variety of places:
  • Around the edge of southern Brimhaven

  • Inside of Shilo Village

  • Big Net Fishing (Catherby and The Fishing Guild)

  • Sea-Type Monster Drops (including Dagannoths and Rockcrabs)

  • Inside the big nets on the walls of the Piscatoris Fishing Colony

Sand can also be obtained in several other places as well, including:
  • Yanille

  • Shilo Village

  • Zanaris (The Lost City)

Distill some Swamp Tar at the Rimmington chemist, and use your incomplete lantern with the still to have an unlit lantern. Light it with a Tinderbox.

To be able to craft the Candle Lantern, Oil Lamp, or Lantern Lens you must speak to the NPC who is guarding the dungeon in Lumbridge Swamps and ask him how-to craft lanterns.

Jewelry

The fabrication of jewelry is one of the oldest parts of Crafting, and, as the name implies, lets you create jewelry. Specifically, you can manufacture items from Gold and Silver. Many people like having gems in their jewelry. Gems may be obtained from stealing from stalls, or as a random reward whilst mining. Cut them using a Chisel.

To manufacture any jewelry, you first must purchase an appropriate jewelry mould from any Crafting supply store (common ones located in Al Kharid or Rimmington). To use this mould, you must first collect the bars needed for what you're Crafting, along with gems if appropriate. Use the bars on a furnace to craft the jewelry. Amulets and symbols must be strung with a ball of wool to be worn.

Basic Jewelry Info

Besides the making of the actual jewelry (involving the gems and ores and whatnot), you can't forget the basics, such as cutting gems or stringing jewelry. Info on that is in the table below. There is a chance that with a low Crafting level, you will crush the gem instead of cutting it. The number in the parenthesis is the experience gained from crushing the gem.

Amulet of Nature

There is a special amulet that you can make: the Amulet of Nature. It can be used to help you keep track of one of your farming patches. However, you can only have one amulet at a time.

To make the Amulet of Nature, take an unstrung Emerald Amulet. Instead of stringing it with a ball of wool, string it with a spun magic root (which can be used by spinning magic tree roots on a spinning wheel). After you have strung it, you will have to enchant it with a Level 2 Enchant spell, which is 3 Airs and 1 Cosmic runes. To bind it with a farming patch, simply use the amulet with the patch. You will now be able to see if your patches have finished growing or have died.

Enchanted Jewelery

Gold jewelery can be enchanted using the Magic skill (see Modern Magic), which will give it all sorts of power. The table below is a list of which unenchanted jewelery is required and what they can do:

Note: Some jewelery will break after using up all their charges. They will be mentioned below.

  • The Bracelet of Combat can teleport to the Warriors, Champions and Ranging Guilds

  • The Necklace of Skills can teleport to the Fishing, Mining, Crafting and Cooking Guilds

All three of them can hold 4 teleportation charges. When they are used up, they will not break, but you will have to recharge them to teleport again. Amulet of Glories are recharged at the underground fountain of the Heroes Guild. Bracelets of Combat and Necklaces of Skills can be recharged at the totem in the Legends Guild.

Battlestaves

High level member crafters can improve upon their basic magic staves by Crafting their own Battlestaves. The elemental Battlestaff has the same properties as a normal elemental staff (acts as an infinite number of it's elemental rune type), yet can deal more melee damage.
Battlestaves can also be enchanted to become Mystic Staves after completing the Scorpion Catcher Quest, which drastically improves it's combat potential.

To craft a Battlestaff, you must 'enchant' a Glass Orb (made by glassblowing) at an elemental Obelisk. To do so, you must have a high enough Magic level to cast the appropriate charge orb spell. Bring the runes required to cast the spell, along with the uncharged orb, to the Obelisk. Cast the charge spell on the Obelisk to enchant your orb.

Extra Crafting Info

There are some other, extra things that you should know about while raising crafting:

The Crafting Guild

Don't forget The Crafting Guild! Located North of Rimmington, with level 40 crafting you can enter. Inside are many crafting features, cows to get leather from, gold to mine, and much more. It can be very useful to get the level and enter. See the Crafting Guild Guide for more info.

Cape of Accomplishment

The ultimate reward for getting level 99 Crafting is not only the great ability you will have in the skill, but the Cape of Accomplishment that you will have the oppurtunity to purchase. For more information on Capes of Accomplishment, see the Skill Capes page.
