Barbarian Smithing

When people think of Barbarians and what they go through, all they think of are axes and maces and stuff.

This is bias, and blatantly incorrect. Barbarians are people like everyone else and they have emotions and intelligence. They go through as much discipline as anyone else in battle and skills - in fact, in some skills, they are more accomplished then many others. Barbarian Training offers various new aspects of Herblore, Fishing, Woodcutting and Smithing, including new ways to gain experience, new types of food, more inventory slots, and lots of other goodies.

Getting Started

Woah, slow down there, Bjorg. You can't just rush into the Barbarian ways! You'll end up regretting, and maybe even fed to some mythological Norse creature like the Kraken - which is never a fun time.

To get started training Barbarian, head to Otto Goblessed in his hut, on the west side of the Baxtorian Falls. Talk to him to begin your training - he will give you a book to record your barbarian progress in - which I now notice really isn't a desirable trait I personally look for in barbarians. Literacy.

Otto the palindrome will assign you various educational tasks to show you the skills of barbarians. As you complete your tasks, more and more Barbarian Skills will be at your disposal. A message will tell you when you have finished enough of Otto's tasks.

The information on this page shows all the barbarian skills, as well as info pertaining to them. You'll need to know these things as Otto teaches you and you'll need to know them when you forget afterwards and are stuck in the desert trying to make a fire without a tinderbox with a shark you caught with youre barehands. A sandshark.

Barbarian Firemaking
Starting Requirements: Level 35 Firemaking, a bow (any type)

Normally two words you don't want to hear remotely close to each other, Barbarian Firemaking is very useful. First off, there is the useful skill of creating fires without a tinderbox.

Pyre Ships

After you can start a fire without a tinderbox, you can end a dangerous cavern below the lake by Otto. This cavern is home to what is possibly the most dangerous non-boss (KBD, Kalphite Queen, etc.) NPC in the game - Mithril Dragons. You can enter this cave by 'jumping into' a whirlpool in the lake after you can start a fire without a tinderbox.

Inside, with some luck, you will be able to obtain some 'chewed bones', dropped by the dragons. Once you have some chewed bones, you are ready to create a Pyre Ship. Grab some logs, and go back to Otto's hut. Pyre Ships can only be built on the charred ground around the lake, where you can right click and select to construct a pyre site. Burning a pyre ship will grant you a bonus to your Prayer experience depending upon which type of logs you use to construct the ship. You will receive a 300% bonus to Prayer experience the next few times that you bury bones.

Once burning a pyre ship, you will be rewarded treasure - there is even the chance of getting a Dragon Full Helm! However, make sure you use 'chewed bones' - if you use 'mangled bones', you will be attacked!

Barbarian Fishing
Starting Requirements: Level 48 Fishing, level 15 Agility & Strength

Another task that Otto will set you to is fishing some of the strong and able bodied fish near his hut. These fish are elite, you see - they don't take crap. You need rod and bait to catch them, but a normal rod will not work. Otto will give you his heavy rod, which you can reobtain by searching near his bed. To catch the strong fish, you can use a variety of bait. You can use any of the following:

- Regular Fishing Bait
- Feathers
- Fish Parts
- Roe
- Caviar

Once you have some bait and the heavy rod, you can start fishing from the spots near Otto's house.

When you have caught these fish, you can use a knife on them for 10 Cooking experience. Knifing the fish also yields fish parts, as well as roe or caviar. Fish parts are stackable and can only be used as bait; roe and caviar are used in Barbarian Herblore.

Fishing Without A Harppoon

Another feat of Barbarian Fishing is fishing large fish without a harpoon. The trick is using one arm as bait to lure the fish to you, and then grabbing it with the other before it chomps into your forearm. In reality, it isn't the smartest idea; but it can be useful. To fish like this, you will need at least 55 Fishing and 35 Strength.

Barbarian Herblore
Starting Requirements: Level 4 Herblore, 2-Dose Attack Potion, Roe or Caviar

Combat in Runescape is very dangerous. There are hundreds of factors to think about - from being attacked by tiny ferocious monkeys or worrying about your opponent turning into a rock. People of course bring potions with them to boost their advvantages - but of course that takes up space that could be holding food. Those clever barbarians, however, have mastered combining the two. By taking any two-dose potion (any potion with only two doses left; you can make one by using an empty vial on a four dose potion) and adding caviar or roe (obtained by knifing any fish caught with a heavy rod), your potion will not only retain its original effects, it will also heal 3-6 hitpoints. These new potions are called 'mixes'.

Barbarian Smithing
Starting Requirements: Level 5 Herblore, must have completed the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest

Apparently, the majority of spears in Runescape are made by barbarians. I suppose that is what barbarians do in their free time - when they aren't pillaging or fighting or, as we've learned, hoping fishes try to bite their arms off. They also make hastas - one handed spears.

When Otto instructs you to try this, you need to take a bar of metal (for whatever type of spear or hasta you want), as well as a type of wood that pertains to it. With a hammer in your inventory as well, use it on an anvil to create what you want. The same level is required and experience is gained for both spears and hastas.
